English description
The Department of Zoology and Ecology of the University of Navarra maintains the Museum of Zoology, a research collection of animals found in samples from various projects carried out by the Department. The 2,500,000+ holdings (mostly invertebrates), including several type series, are used for research and are available to scientists upon request. The Museum overlaps in part with the Museum of Natural Sciences of the University of Navarra, which displays some 7,000 accessioned specimens (vertebrates and invertebrates) in a permanent, public display at the School of Sciences, along with minerals and other educational items. Several large collections have been donated to the University for display at the Museum, such as the historical Lecároz Collection made worldwide during centuries by the Friars of the Our Lady of the Good Advice College, or the Joaquín del Río Collection of Molluscs of the World.
The 40 specialists at the Department, including 10 staff professors, routinely maintain a taxonomic database of collected specimens, which is a part of the larger departamental database that includes bibliographic, environmental, biological and geographical data, too. The 600,000-record database includes some 100,000 accessions, along with more than 150,000 literature records of nearly 30,000 species.
