Description

La colección de algas del herbario MGC (MGC-Algae), es una de las más importantes de este tipo del mediterráneo occidental. La base de datos MGC-Algae tiene como objetivo la digitalización y publicación de los datos asociados con los más de 5.300 especímenes que se encuentran depositados en la colección, de los cuales el 95% está identificados a nivel de especie.Desde 2011, los Servicios Centrales de Investigación (SCAI) de la Universidad de Málaga son responsables de mantener el herbario y sus respectivas bases de datos.La colección está digitalizada a través del programa Herbar v3.7.1 (F. Pando et al. 1996-2011), estando la información de los especímenes accesibles a través de la red de GBIF (http://www.gbif.org/dataset/962e2f2e-f762-11e1-a439-00145eb45e9a).En la actualidad, la colección MGC-Algae contiene especímenes procedentes de 113 familias y 899 taxones, distribuidos en Rodófitas (54,6%), Feófitas (29,2%) and Clorófitas (15,8%). Por otro lado, las Cianófitas sólo representan el 0,4%.La mayoría de los pliegos proceden del Mediterráneo occidental, principalmente del sur de España (Andalucia= 54.5% de los especímenes), siento la provincia de Málaga la mejor representada con un 20.4%. Hay que destacar, especímenes procedentes de Marruecos (9,3%), Japón (5%) y de la Antártida (1,4%).La mayor incorporación de pliegos en la colección MGC-Algae se dio entre 1975 y 1996, años que reflejan la intensa actividad del Dr. Francisco Conde. Las recolecciones de los años 2007 y 2008 corresponden a proyectos encaminados a completar la flora ficológica de Andalucía.Además, la colección de algas del Herbario MGC alberga tres pequeñas colecciones catalogadas como históricas por su antigedad y origen. Un herbario de 198 ejemplares procedente de la Academia Malagueña de Ciencias donados en 1975 (Conde, 1992), otro donado por el Instituto de Investigaciones Pesqueras de Cádiz, compuesto por 80 pliegos, y finalmente una colección de 61 preparaciones microscópicas donado por el Laboratorio Oceanográfico de Málaga.El herbario MGC es uno de los herbarios de referencia para Flora Phycologica Iberica (Gómez-Garreta 2000-) La revista Acta Botanica Malacitana (B. Cabezudo 1975-) (http://www.biolveg.uma.es/abm/abm.html) está estrechamente relacionada con el herbario MGC y periodicamente publica artículos que están basados en datos incluidos en su colección. The MGC herbarium algae collection (MGC-Algae) is one the most important collections of this kind at Western Mediterranean Region. MGC-Algae dataset aims to digitize and publish data associated with over 5.300 specimens deposited in the collection, of which 95% of the specimens are identified at species level. Since 2011, the University of Malaga’s Central Research Service (SCAI) has been responsible for maintaining the herbarium and datasets. The collection is digitized by Herbar v3.7.1 software (F. Pando et al. 1996–2011), making specimens accessible through the GBIF network (http://www.gbif.org/dataset/962e2f2e-f762-11e1-a439-00145eb45e9a). At present, 113 families and 899 taxa, distributed in Rhodophyta (54.6%), Phaeophyta (29.2%) and Chlorophyta (15.8%), constitute the MGC-Algae collection, whereas, Cyanophyta make only up 0.4%. Most of the specimens are from the Western Mediterranean Region, mainly Southern Spain (Andalusia= 54.5% of specimens), Malaga province being the most important with 20.4%. It is worth highlighting specimens from Morocco (9.3%), Japan (5%) and Antarctica (1.4%).The higher sheet intake in this collection was since 1975 to 1996, main research period of PhD. Francisco Conde. Harvesting period from 2007 to 2008 is corresponded with projects for completing the Andalusian phycological flora.Moreover, this algae collection contain three little collections classified as historic collections due to their age and origin. An herbarium make up 198 sheets from Malaga Academy of Sciences given at 1975 (Conde, 1192), another one donated by Cadiz Fisheries Research Institute, constituted of 80 sheets and finally a collection of 61 microscopic slides given by Malaga Oceanographic Center.MGC herbarium is one of the reference herbaria for Flora Phycologica Iberica (Gómez-Garreta 2000-). The journal Acta Botanica Malacitana (B. Cabezudo 1975-) (http://www.biolveg.uma.es/abm/abm.html) is closely associated with the MGC Herbarium and periodically publishes papers that are based on data included in its dataset.

Taxonomic Coverage

The 5.300 sheets of the MGC-Algae collection are grouped into 113 families, 333 genera, 840 species and 899 taxa (including infraspecific categories). Most of the specimens are red algae (Rhodophyta= 54.6%), followed by brown algae (Phaeophyta= 29.2%) and green algae (Chlorophyta= 15.8%). The main families in order of abundance are Rhodomelaceae (8.4%), Sargassaceae (7.3%), Dictyotaceae (7.1%), Corallinaceae (6.4%) and Ceramiaceae (5.0%).Main genera in order of abundance are Cystoseira (4.6%), Codium (3.7%), Ulva (3.6%), Asparagopsis (3.3%) and Gelidium (3.2%)

Sampling Methods

The plants of this collection were mainly gathered by researchers of the Botany Area of the Department of Plant Biology at University of Malaga, as well as by members of the herbarium. A small component of the collection comes from exchanges or donations from other research centres or researchers.

Study Extent Most plants are from Southern Spain (Andalusia), Malaga province being the most widely represented area, the aim being to cover the widest degree of seaweed biodiversity for this territory. In addition, the collection contains seaweed from Northern Morocco and several places from the rest of Spain and countries from Europe and Africa.
Quality Control Every specimen of the MGC-Algae collection has been identified by researchers of the Botany Area of the Department of Plant Biology at University of Malaga. The dataset is analysed in search of digitalisation errors before uploading to the GBIF Portal. This check is carried out by the DarwinTest v3.2 tool (Ortega-Maqueda and Pando 2008), provided by the Spanish GBIF Node. This tool looks for mistakes in taxonomy, dates, geospatial information, collectors, identifiers, etc.

Method step description:

  1. Before incorporating new plants in the herbarium, the steps described below are followed. First, the material is pressed and dried, mounted on double A2 standard size (42 × 59.4 cm) sheets which perfectly cover and protect the specimen. Inside each sheet, an identification label provides the following information: taxonomy, country, province, county, locality, georeference, date, ecology, collectors and determinations. To kill any insects contained in the sheets, they are frozen at -20 °C for 72 hours. Periodically, the herbarium room is fumigated. The specimens are kept in compact shelving cabinets and alphabetically arranged by families, genera and species.
