CESP Project: National portals addressing national challenges

The CESP Project: National portals addressing national challenges, selected by GBIF within the 2023 call for proposals of the Capacity Enhancement Support Programme (CESP), gathers the knowledge and experiences of four GBIF partner nodes around the two most used types of biodiversity data portals: Living Atlases and Hosted Portals, and how these can be utilized to address national challenges.

The aim of the CESP Project: National portals addressing national challenges is to leverage this diverse and complementary experience to strengthen the capacity of GBIF national nodes to respond to national challenges in various areas (science, management, conservation, policy, etc.) using national biodiversity data portals. This involves: 1) collecting, structuring, and documenting use cases and experiences; and 2) developing training materials designed to enhance the capabilities of the global GBIF nodes community.

The main actions of the project include:

  • Comparing the characteristics and functionalities of the two types of data portals.
  • Designing a form to collect and describe use cases (Designing the Biodiversity Data Use Case Description Form).
  • Producing a catalogue of documented use cases.
  • Preparing a training plan for the global nodes community with the obtained results.
  • Developing materials on eLearning platforms on how to exploit national portals to address national challenges.
